The Sunset House

Perched within the wooded hills of Karuizawa, The Sunset House was conceived as a quiet retreat immersed in nature. Surrounded by dense foliage and elevated above the landscape, the residence embraces its setting through openness, restraint, and a strong connection to the outdoors. Rather than competing with its environment, the house allows the shifting light, changing seasons, and surrounding woodland to shape the daily living experience.
The residence is organized through a series of contemporary linear volumes, where floating horizontal and vertical planes establish a calm architectural rhythm from the moment of arrival. Spanning approximately 260 square meters, the house demonstrates a thoughtful approach to spatial planning, balancing openness with privacy within a relatively compact footprint.
The planning revolves around two primary axes. The first separates the public and private functions of the home, creating a clear transition between communal living spaces and more intimate family areas. The second axis extends toward the surrounding landscape, framing views of the forest and drawing natural scenery deep into the interior. This arrangement allows the outdoors to remain constantly present throughout the house, reinforcing a sense of continuity between architecture and nature.
Natural light plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the residence. Expansive glazing introduces soft daylight into the interiors while carefully positioned openings capture changing views of the surrounding woodland throughout the day. The interior palette remains warm and understated, allowing texture, light, and landscape to define the character of each space rather than excessive material expression.
The living areas open seamlessly toward the outdoors, encouraging a slower and more grounded way of living connected to the rhythms of the site. A private onsen further strengthens this relationship with nature, offering a quiet place for retreat while overlooking the surrounding greenery. Integrated into the daily routine of the family, the onsen becomes less a feature of luxury and more an extension of the home’s calm atmosphere.
A sculptural staircase forms one of the central moments within the residence. Positioned carefully within the plan, it acts as both a circulation element and a visual connection to the landscape beyond. As one moves through the house, the staircase frames layered views toward the trees and changing natural light, creating a subtle dialogue between movement, architecture, and the outdoors.
Throughout the residence, the design avoids unnecessary gestures, instead focusing on proportion, openness, and atmosphere. The architecture remains quiet, allowing the surrounding environment to take prominence while supporting a comfortable and contemporary family lifestyle.
At The Sunset House, architecture and landscape exist in close relationship. The experience of the home is shaped not by excess, but by clarity, natural light, and the calm presence of its setting.
