Blending Past and Present A New Chapter for an Old Home
Project Description
This old home holds cherished memories of over 40 years and is a testament to the bond that ties people together. Fusing nostalgia with modernity, this renovation creates a space that honors history while embracing novelty and fulfilling daily needs. Deeply attached to the home, the house owner is looking to renovate and modernize the home while keeping its historic charm. The house ingeniously combines the original elements such as cypress wood, begonia-patterned glass, wrought iron window grilles, and aged wood doors, seamlessly fulfilling the needs of modern living. Restoring and repurposing can breathe new life into old items. The coexistence of past and present infuses the space with rich narratives, fostering a meaningful dialogue between time, space, and the people who call it home.
A New Role for the Old Building
By giving new purpose to old items, we infuse the home with unique character and style.
Entryway:
The feature wall with its original terrazzo finish preserves the vintage details that make the home unique. Meanwhile, the wrought iron window grilles, originally used for security, have been carefully sanded, refinished, and repurposed as a plant wall and a decorative partition to conceal the console cabinet. The thoughtful design takes people back in time the moment they step inside.
Living Room:
On the display wall, the wooden window frames of varying sizes are rearranged and transformed into layered shelves. Each glass panel’s unique embossed texture exudes historic charm, infusing the living room with a rich nostalgic ambiance.
Study Room:
The original floor-to-ceiling engraved wooden door from the entryway has been restored and embedded into the wall behind the sofa. The design creates an ever-changing interplay of void and solid to balance out visual weight of the wall while allowing light to flow through. In the study room, a traditional Japanese cypress kimono cabinet is placed in the raised sleeping area like a piece of treasured artwork. It emanates a subtle, soothing fragrance, adding to the room’s serene ambiance.
Layout
Given the home's original elongated structure with limited natural light from a single side, an open-concept layout is introduced to enhance light flow. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are seamlessly connected, enhancing the overall brightness while creating a central hub for family interaction. To balance openness with privacy, a floor-to-ceiling engraved wooden door is embedded in the wall behind the sofa. This allows soft, diffused light to filter through while maintaining a sense of seclusion in the study room. With its original height preserved, the space draws the eye upward and enhances natural light and ventilation, creating a spacious and airy living environment.
Materials and Style
The space features extensive gray-toned artistic coatings, with their raw textures accentuating the aged vintage elements. The weathered patterns seamlessly bridge the past and present. Sleek, clean lines define distinct zones without disrupting the visual flow. These lines draw attention to the antique furnishings, highlighting their unique charm. The space is a harmonious blend of contemporary style and nostalgic charm, presenting a unique and enchanting aesthetic.
