Wabi-sabi house

Wabi-sabi is not a design reference here, but the organizing principle of the space itself. For a retired couple seeking stillness in the mountains of Yangpyeong, this interior was conceived as a sustained meditation on the passage of time.
The material palette speaks in textures before it speaks in forms. Corten steel, basalt, reclaimed timber, tatami, natural stone, and diatomite plaster — each chosen not for novelty, but for their capacity to age with grace. Horizontal and vertical grain intersect throughout, establishing a visual rhythm that moves unbroken from the entrance through the living areas, bedroom, bathroom, and into the detached pavilion. No transition is abrupt; every threshold is a quiet conversation between materials.
At the heart of the space stands the kitchen island — a single object housing tatami, oxidized metal, natural stone, hand-crafted hanji acrylic lighting, wood veneer, and solid stone slab. It is a miniature of the house itself: every material of the project converging before dispersing into their individual spaces.
The staircase carries that spirit further — a sculptural fusion of claro walnut and resin evoking a mountain stream passing through stone, among the first of its kind in Korea.
The outdoor pavilion, drawn from the quiet authority of Kengo Kuma's Meiji Jingu Museum, pairs heavy timber structure with folded zinc cladding to create a meditation space that simply belongs to its landscape.
As materials wear, grains deepen, and colors shift — may every mark left behind be not damage, but the beauty of a life fully lived. May this house age gracefully, together with the two people it holds.
