Höllviken sits on the Falsterbo Peninsula on the southwestern fringe of Sweden, a narrow stretch of land between the Baltic Sea and Öresund. Spectacular nature reserves, pine groves, heathland and coastline with dunes and white sand beaches.
The serenity on the site was striking. The soft wild heather absorbed all the sound except for a meditative whisper from the gentle winds through the treetops, forming a second roof. The immediate instinct was to preserve and amplify that feeling of being embraced by nature. How can we build something that fulfills all the aspects of the program in the brief without losing touch with nature. Harness the light, frame the views and open up wide to let in the birdsong and the fresh air.
Every tree on the site was carefully measured so that the footprint of the building could be nestled between them. Windows are positioned to frame and highlight the most striking views of the untouched nature outside. By preserving the natural landscape with pine, birch, heather and moss, the rich biodiversity of smaller plants, birds and insects can continue to thrive. The zinc roof shelters the entire building and contributes to the poetic beauty that resides in the simple, familiar and understated.This villa is designed with the conviction that details are central to how we experience architecture. Every consideration aims to amplify a sense of delight by enhancing the perception of nature, light, materiality and space.
The energy source is renewable geothermal. A well insulated envelope ​​minimizes the need for heating and cooling. The mass of masonry provides a pleasant thermal comfort that cools in the summer and warms in the winter. All materials are robust and durable across centuries, resulting in a low life cycle cost (LCC). Passive solar shading reduces energy for cooling. Wooden components for facade cladding, beams, ceilings and cabinetry are climate negative.
However, the most sustainable thing about the house is probably the quality and architectural delight that make the villa durable for centuries rather than decades. Over time, quality is synonymous with sustainability.
