Veil of Silence

A full renovation of a vintage apartment located in the heart of central Tokyo.
Although situated only a few minutes from a major station, the residence was constantly surrounded by the noise and intensity of the city.
This project was designed as a quiet counterpoint to its urban surroundings — a home enveloped in calmness, softness, and subtle dignity.
The interior palette is composed of whites and muted greige tones, while intentionally avoiding cold minimalism.
Japanese-made textile wallcoverings crafted from plant-derived natural materials were applied continuously throughout the living areas, corridors, bedrooms, and even the doors themselves.
By extending the same tactile material across the entire residence, visual noise is softened and a seamless sense of tranquility is created.
Two tones of wallcovering are layered horizontally, bringing delicate depth and quiet elegance to the pale interior composition.
As natural light shifts throughout the day, soft shadows move gently across the textured surfaces, allowing the walls to exist not merely as backgrounds, but as quiet landscapes within the home.
The formerly enclosed kitchen was transformed into an open central space that encourages connection among family members.
At the same time, practical elements such as the refrigerator were carefully concealed behind partial-height walls in order to preserve the calm atmosphere and maintain visual clarity.
At the entrance, wooden louvers were introduced to gently mediate privacy while allowing light to pass through the narrow foyer.
This creates both spatial depth and a refined threshold between public and private realms.
Rather than expressing luxury through ornamentation, the project pursues a quieter form of richness — one shaped by natural materials, filtered light, restrained textures, and intentional emptiness.
The result is a residence that offers a sense of breathing silence within the center of the metropolis.
