Okubo Yakiniku restaurant

This project reinterprets the essence of the yakiniku dining experience through the fundamental human act of gathering around fire, aiming to redefine the role of dining spaces within the contemporary city. In an era where commercial interiors are increasingly standardized and efficiency-driven, the design seeks to restore the physical and experiential qualities that once defined communal dining.
The exterior is composed of rugged stone-like textures combined with a timber structural frame, introducing a sense of primitive mass and materiality into the artificial fabric of the city. Rather than functioning solely as a storefront, the architecture acts as a distinct urban scene, creating a threshold that gently transitions visitors from the everyday urban environment into a more immersive spatial experience.
Inside, the space is organized around elemental materials—stone, wood, steel, and fire. Mechanical systems and ventilation ducts are intentionally exposed and integrated into the architectural language rather than concealed. The grill hoods and ducts visualize the movement of heat and smoke, transforming the act of grilling into a spatial and sensory experience.
Tables are arranged with clarity and rhythm, each forming an independent “fire-centered place.” This configuration establishes individual focal points while maintaining a cohesive spatial field throughout the dining hall. Lighting is designed to resonate with the warmth of the flame, creating an atmosphere that enhances the perception of time, encouraging guests to linger and engage with the experience.
At the same time, the project carefully balances strong spatial identity with operational efficiency, ensuring smooth circulation and functional clarity required for a high-performance restaurant environment. By addressing multiple layers—materiality, light, scale, and movement—the design creates a memorable place that extends beyond visual aesthetics.
GLODEN approaches architecture as a medium that connects culture, society, and spatial experience. This project explores the possibility of a commercial dining space that functions not only as a restaurant, but also as a small architectural landscape within the city—one that reconnects people with the primal act of gathering around fire.
