Nanjing Tongrentang – Tea Shop of Le Shopkeeper

by XIWEN HU

Project Description

Nanjing Tongrentang, located in Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, is the only company in Nanjing that produces ancient traditional varieties with modern technology and has a long history. Its predecessor was the Beijing Tongrentang Kyoto Lejia Laopu Nanjing Branch, which opened in Nanjing in 1929. We have designed this project based on its brand characteristics and the long history of Nanjing.
We have designed the traditional Chinese medicine room and its extended Chinese health tea drinking area for this project separately. In the traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy area, we adhere to the concept of inheritance and shape the spatial form. Combining the history of the Republic of China in Nanjing, "blue bricks and green tiles" serve as the design language for the entire space, while incorporating the distinctive floral windows of the Republic of China to enhance the overall atmosphere and sense of history of the space. Set up and restore the functional areas of the old "Chinese medicine bucket" and "shopkeeper's desk" in the space, and combine modern design techniques to make the entire space more historically unique and heavy.
In the Chinese tea drinking area, we combine contemporary design elements to create a unique "medieval" style tea drinking area. The overall space has pure colors and simple materials. The overall water bar created in the form of bamboo enhances the Chinese style of the space.
