El Retiro Spa

This project originates as a space for retreat, conceived through introspection — a personal and private spa set in the mountains of Tapalpa, where the architecture deliberately renounces the idea of a façade: there is no gesture toward the exterior, no frontal composition. The building does not seek to be seen, but to be inhabited.
Just as the architecture turns its full attention inward, the program it houses shares this same introspective condition. It is a constellation of spaces conceived for pause, contemplation, and rest; a sequence that invites one to slow down.
The entrance is emphasized as the only outward gesture. From that point, the project descends and is organized into four distinct volumes. These are connected through a cross-shaped circulation that structures the whole and emphasizes the transition between areas. The movement from one space to another defines the experience. Visual terminations, the play of light, and the handling of light and shadow shape the project’s atmosphere.
Light does not invade; it emerges. It originates within the different enclosures and filters into the circulations, marking transitions and establishing contrasts. Low light operates as a threshold that articulates the sequence of movement.
The project unfolds as a sensory sequence — an exercise in which the absence of a façade is, in fact, a position: to situate the interior atmosphere as the project’s primary value, where light, shadow, materiality, and movement construct the experience of space.
