Beyond Straight Lines

by Barbara Studio

Project Description

This project was created with the goal of designing a home that transcends trends and provides a functional, comfortable, and high-quality living environment for years to come. Designed for a family of three in Croatia, the interior explores the balance between serenity and character, simplicity and artistic expression, functionality and emotion.
The concept was driven by the desire to create a space that fosters a sense of warmth and belonging while simultaneously inspiring its users and enhancing everyday living. Earthy tones form the foundation of the interior, establishing a calm and inviting atmosphere, while carefully selected colors, artworks, and details introduce personality, depth, and individuality.
The project demonstrates that contemporary design does not need to be defined solely by straight lines and rigid geometry. Through fluid forms, rounded elements, and layered material compositions, the space acquires a softer, more human, and emotionally engaging character. Wave-inspired forms, circular details, and carefully balanced spatial elements create a sense of movement and connection between different areas while maintaining visual harmony and tranquility.
Special attention was given to the daily habits and needs of the residents, creating an environment that responds equally to practical requirements and aesthetic aspirations. The kitchen island incorporates a concealed induction cooktop and a retractable ventilation system that remain hidden when not in use. This allows the island to preserve its clean visual appearance while serving as a central place for gathering, food preparation, and social interaction.
As a subtle reflection of a thoughtful approach to everyday living, the kitchen island includes a dedicated space for growing fresh rosemary and basil. This feature connects daily cooking rituals with nature while adding an additional layer of functionality and personal character to the interior. At the same time, it reinforces the idea that good design shapes not only the space itself, but also the way people experience and use it on a daily basis.
The material palette consists of wood, stone, ceramic surfaces, mirrors, wallpaper, and microcement. These materials were selected for their ability to combine durability with contemporary appeal, creating a rich tactile experience through the contrast of textures and natural surfaces. Their presence contributes to the timeless quality and authenticity of the interior.
Art plays an important role in shaping the identity of the space. Abstract artworks were introduced as open invitations for interpretation, allowing each user to form a personal emotional connection with the environment. Color is used thoughtfully and with restraint, serving as an accent that brings energy and individuality without disrupting the overall sense of calm.
The project represents a home designed for real life, a space that responds as carefully to the everyday needs of its residents as it does to their desire for beauty, comfort, and inspiration. Through the combination of functional innovation, natural materials, and expressive forms, the interior creates an environment that fosters serenity, belonging, and lasting value.

Her work is driven by the belief that successful design should be more than visually appealing—it should create spaces that enhance everyday life and reflect the individuality of their users.
Her design approach is based on balancing aesthetics and functionality, creating interiors that are both beautiful and purposeful. Rather than following short-term trends, Barbara focuses on designing timeless environments that remain relevant, comfortable, and meaningful over time.
She is particularly interested in exploring the relationship between form, materiality, light, and emotion. Through the thoughtful use of natural materials, carefully considered spatial planning, and attention to detail, she creates interiors that feel warm, authentic, and deeply connected to the people who inhabit them.
Barbara believes that every project should tell a unique story. Her work is characterized by an individual approach to each client, where personal needs, lifestyle, and aspirations become the foundation of the design process. By combining creativity with practical solutions, she aims to create spaces that support everyday living while offering a distinctive aesthetic identity.
Her portfolio includes a wide range of residential and commercial projects, each guided by the same philosophy: to create harmonious interiors where beauty, functionality, materials, light, and atmosphere work together as a cohesive whole.
Through her work, Barbara seeks to demonstrate that contemporary design can be sophisticated without being cold, functional without sacrificing beauty, and expressive while remaining timeless.
