Apartment Renovation in Aoyama

In this project, rather than foregrounding the strength of form, the aim was to achieve both a quiet tension and a sense of embrace within the space — through the precise calibration of curved surfaces, materials, and light. Instead of treating walls, ceilings, furniture, and circulation as independent elements, gentle curvature connects them into a continuous whole, so that the movement of the body and the flow of the gaze are guided naturally. The intention was not to compete in visual novelty, but to pursue a composition in which calm and richness arise only when one is physically present within the space.
In the material planning, stone, timber, and textile were not simply arranged as surface finish choices. Each texture and shadow was composed to resonate with the others, so that depth and warmth would emerge throughout the space. Hard materials were given the role of lending the space a quiet firmness, while curved surfaces and fabric were entrusted with a softness that receives the body. Through this contrast, a restrained richness was created — luxurious, yet never tilting toward excess ornament.
For the lighting as well, rather than making the fixtures themselves visible, emphasis was placed on allowing the light to trace the contours of the space. Rather than positioning light as isolated points, it was diffused along planes and edges, so that the curvature of ceilings and walls would gently surface. The intention was not to describe the space through brightness, but to allow its depth to be perceived through gradients of shadow.
What this space aspired to was not the accumulation of elements to construct an impression. Rather, by refining the composition and raising the precision of form, material, light, and circulation, the aim was to increase the experiential density of the space. Not an interior to be looked at, but a space in which the senses settle through inhabitation, and where even the gestures of daily life quietly begin to change. The essence of this design lies in its intention to act upon the quality of living itself, rather than upon surface style.
