A Commune Rhapsody

A Commune Rhapsody is a student hostel that aims to integrate architecture, culture, and nature into an inspirational co-living environment. As part of a tertiary education campus in Cambodia, the project harmonises built spaces with lush green landscapes. The hostel is more than just accommodation; it is a vibrant and engaging space where students can thrive academically, socially, and environmentally. The overall scheme put together a lush podium with 2 blocks of student accommodation separated by staff accommodation blocks. The zoning strategy allows for a public realm isolated at the lower levels, and semi-public space that is exclusive to the residents on the 2nd floor to buffer the private areas on the towers.
Design Concept
The design concept draws inspiration from the rhythm and instruments of traditional Khmer music. The fluid architectural form evokes a frozen piece of Khmer music characterised by its polyphonic stratification in a lively and improvised style. Spaces are seamlessly interwoven to connect the different functional areas. A free-form terraced podium anchors the project, housing communal spaces such as a gym, cafeteria, and social lounges. The overall feel of the complex has an uplifting colours that reflect the youthfulness and energy of the residence. A Commune Rhapsody has vibrant colors that reflect the energy and liveliness of youth. Essentially, the presence of green brings people together as it forms a comforting space of respite. Nature brings serenity to the people and, in a way, improves the social scene of the community directly.
Planning
The hostel is generally a very high-density residential living. The architectural planning aims for fluid spaces that have many visual connections and a great sense of outdoors. Together with the lush pocket of gardens in different realms, the objective is to motivate residents to utilize the communal spaces more. Open communal spaces are the highlights of the hostel, with spaces of varied spatial experience to serve diverse social activities. The belief is to formulate venues that enable people to cultivate a passion and to grow.
Ecological approach
Huge atrium spaces with skylights are designed at Block A & Block C to improve natural daylighting, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. The skylights contribute to a healthier and more enjoyable experience in the corridor and communal spaces. In addition, onion-shaped lookout pods are thoughtfully integrated within the atrium as informal gathering spaces that encourage interaction and collaborative learning.
Sustainability features
Local materials such as bamboo, timber, granolithic finishes, and native flora are carefully integrated into the floor, wall, and ceiling design. Bamboo-imprinted planters along the façade introduce a tactile contrast against the smooth off-form concrete walls, adding warmth and texture to the architecture. Floral imprint walls inspired by native Cambodian flowers create visual interest and granolithic floor patterns with colors are pieced together. These features demonstrate that appealing designs can be achieved economically and sustainably too.
Social Connection
A Commune Rhapsody emphasizes an experience that fosters personal growth and community. Blending off-form concrete architecture with nature, it creates a living space that is both functional and uplifting. Generous communal areas filled with greenery and natural light are thoughtfully blended throughout the hostel. The environment encourages interaction with abundant provision of communal spaces. The strong connection to nature reduces stress and supports the overall well-being of students for an enriching living experience.
