Wave Villa
Project Description
Wave Villa by ARRCC is a home dramatically envisioned through its deep connection to its surroundings and its striking, wave-like floating roof, which frames the surrounding mountain landmarks.
The villa embodies contemporary organic modernism, where fluid, sculptural forms and natural materials create a seamless dialogue between architecture and environment. The defining roof, an undulating structure, appears to hover delicately above the building, echoing the organic shapes found in nature.
The client envisioned a striking roof that would resemble a veil or wave, spanning the home as a bold architectural statement. The brief called for a grand pavilion atop a preserved lower level, ensuring the upper structure remained the focal point while harmonizing with its surroundings. Maximizing natural light was essential, as the client, an avid gardener, sought a design that integrated sculptural elements while framing breathtaking views of Lion’s Head and the surrounding mountains. Maintaining the lower level’s footprint was also key to ensuring a respectful relationship with the site.
The project features a cast in-situ concrete roof supported by a steel frame, enabling its dynamic, sculptural form while ensuring stability. High-level clerestory windows wrap around the structure, flooding the interiors with natural light and enhancing openness. A neutral yet tactile material palette—combining light oak paneling and Cape Granite—creates a warm contrast against the raw texture of exposed concrete. Perforated metal screens regulate solar exposure, casting soft, shifting light patterns that mimic ocean reflections.
