U Atrium

by Design Team of Campus Development Office, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Project Description

U Atrium is a proposal to redesign the central atrium of the VA Building, transforming a 50-year-old stair void into a lively indoor plaza that is far more than a circulation space. Once primarily a transitional zone, the atrium is reimagined as a social, spatial, and cultural heart of the building — a place where movement, pause, nature, performance, and everyday campus life come together.
At the core of the project is a simple but powerful ambition: to create a “place” rather than merely a passage. By opening the atrium to new forms of occupation and interaction, the design introduces a more welcoming and immersive environment that supports learning, gathering, rest, and creative expression. The intervention respects the architectural legacy of the existing structure while infusing it with new life through greenery, light, color, and flexible programming.
The concept is organised around five core elements, each contributing to the transformation of the atrium into a vibrant hybrid space.
