REFLECTION Cafe
Project Description
REFLECTION Cafe is situated within the Su-style courtyard of the Pan Pacific Suzhou at Panmen. Its name derives from the site’s most iconic cultural landmark—the Ruiguang Pagoda. “REFLECTION” meaning “tower shadow,” also evokes the poetic tradition of Chinese aesthetics in which reflections, silhouettes, and shifting light are used to convey time, memory, and atmosphere. With a compact footprint of 150 sqm (90 sqm interior), the project’s central challenge was to respond to the symbolic presence of the pagoda within a spatially limited interior.
We approached the concept of “shadow” through two distinctly Chinese narrative devices: reflection and silhouette. Along the central axis of the cafe, a transparent glass installation reinterprets the inverted form of Ruiguang Pagoda as it appears reflected on water. Beneath it, a circular water feature is integrated into a communal table. Soft water–drop acoustics create ripples across the surface, allowing the glass structure, water patterns, and ambient light to interact. Scenery, sound, and shadow converge into a generative narrative field, forming a layered, imaginative spatial experience.
The background elevation is organized symmetrically along the same axis, featuring a set of wooden layered beams abstracted from the pagoda’s eaves. Positioned before a large lightbox, the structure becomes a stage-like screen where the silhouette of the barista merges with the illuminated eaves. The ordinary act of making coffee is transformed into a performative scene with a distinctly Eastern theatrical quality.
The flooring adopts classical Suzhou motifs in a patterned inlay, grounding the space in its regional cultural lineage. The facade uses the language of traditional Su-style “long windows” to enhance permeability, ensuring continuity between interior and corridor. A semi-transparent fabric layer is added, functioning as a contemporary interpretation of a Chinese screen. It softens the corridor’s excessive height, improves psychological comfort for passersby, and renders the boundary between inside and outside more porous and atmospheric.
REFLECTION Cafe aims to embed a contemporary cafe into the context of a classical garden—not by replicating tradition, but by activating cultural symbols through light, water, sound, and shadow. Within a modest footprint, the spirit of Ruiguang Pagoda is reinterpreted through dynamic perceptual relationships, giving rise to a renewed and resonant form of spatial storytelling.
