NRD Columnless House
Project Description
Nestled in the serene Samut Prakarn province of Thailand, this three-storey residence stands boldly within a tranquil neighborhood. Commissioned by an affluent bachelor with a passion for Gunpla crafting and outdoor camping, the design concept draws inspiration from the owner's love for Transformers, seamlessly integrating modern brutalist aesthetics with tropical functionality, solid-void relationships, and a captivating play of contrast.
The form manifests a dynamic movement of extrusion and unfolding flow of a solid cube. Concealed within this artful uneven stacking modulars are a level play that orchestrates the spatial programs and the intentional incorporation ‘gaps’ which is the key feature to the cross ventilation in tropical climate. he nuanced shift in levels further facilitates a psychological transition among different activities' paces throughout the property.
Emphasizing authenticity in materials, the main finish comprises honed aggregated exposed concrete, strategically utilized by use of shear walls to optimize openness and achieve spatial efficiency on a narrow site. This finish not only embodies simplicity but also serves as an ideal backdrop for highlighting furniture and objects within the space, lending a monumental presence to the exterior. Frameless glass railing and four-sided framed glazing facade introduce contrasting airy quality, offering a visual counterbalance to the solid structure. Details such as a slender staircase and defined edges also contribute finesse to the overall design.
This project places a paramount emphasis on occupant comfort and environmental impact in the urban context. Building performance enhancements are integrated into every detail, including recessed windows for indirect light intake, an extra thickness of concrete walls for insulation, and retractable panels serving both sun-blocking and privacy functions. In harmonizing aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, this project stands as a testament to innovative design principles and a commitment to enriching urban living experiences.
