Meaningful Black

by Yifei Wang

Project Description

The original layout was a small three-bedroom, one-living-room unit with two south-facing bedrooms and dual balconies. The owners are a young newlywed couple—a post-90s photography studio owner and a dance teacher.
Their lifestyle philosophy and needs:
They didn’t need so many rooms, as unused spaces would just sit empty. Rather than reserving rooms for "occasional guests" who might never come, squeezing out space that could enhance their daily quality of life, they preferred to fully utilize every area for themselves.
We eliminated the room between the living room and the master bedroom, merging it into a more open and airy living space. The small north-facing room was then allocated to the master bedroom, transforming it into a walk-in closet and creating a more functional master suite.
Occasionally, the couple works from home. With two people and a dog sharing the space, they enjoy being together—whether each doing their own thing or working side by side—finding comfort in this sense of companionship. Therefore, we integrated a workspace directly into the living area, deliberately choosing a solid wood bar table instead of a traditional desk. This serves a dual purpose: allowing both seated and standing work positions while also functioning as a casual seating spot when not in use, meeting aesthetic preferences as well.
Perhaps due to the photographer’s profession, the owners have a particular appreciation for the interplay of light and shadow in space. At the same time, they needed a dim environment for daytime projector viewing, making darker spaces their usual home ambiance. In the living room, we opted for dark gray sheer shades, while the master bedroom features black wooden blinds for a similar effect. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the shades, casting shifting layers of light and shadow across the floor and furniture, changing direction as the day progresses.
