LIAO LIAO Café
Project Description
LIAOLIAO Café is a semi-sunken café and dining pavilion located in Luoyang’s Xiyuan Park - an urban forest in one of China’s historic capitals. The project responds to the site’s natural and civic setting through minimal, precise intervention. A radial layout organizes coffee, tea, Western dining, and bar zones around a central courtyard, creating fluid circulation and varied atmospheres.
The design emphasizes material clarity and ecological integration. Exposed steel, stone, rattan, wood, and low-E glass form a restrained palette that blends durability with texture. Transparent façades dissolve the boundary between interior and nature. Modular steel construction minimized onsite impact and ensured long-term performance.and varied atmospheres.
The space enhances public life by supporting multiple user types and rhythms. From solitary tea to group gatherings, it provides shaded terraces, private nooks, and open lawns that encourage diverse social interactions. The café extends park use into a calm, immersive civic experience.and varied atmospheres.
More than a café, it is a spatial anchor - revitalizing underused green space and demonstrating how small, flexible architecture can foster beauty and belonging in daily life.
