Forest House
Project Description
Set within the lush temperate rainforest of Bowen Island, Forest House is delicately perched atop a rugged granite outcrop — one of many that characterize the island’s dramatic topography. Designed for a young family seeking a meaningful shift from urban life in Vancouver, this residence embraces both the remoteness and accessibility of the site, offering a daily communion with nature just an hour from the city.
Forest House is conceived as both sanctuary and threshold — a place that immerses its occupants in the rhythms of the forest while providing protection from the often harsh coastal climate. Composed of two distinct structures with divergent programs, the architectural composition responds directly to the terrain. The smaller building houses pragmatic functions — carport, storage, waste management, and a studio office — while the larger volume accommodates the main dwelling. Together, they form a subtle dialogue across the landscape.
Minimizing impact on the land was a driving force in the design process. Rather than altering the site to fit the building, the architecture conforms to its natural contours. The concrete foundations are precisely scribed to the granite bedrock at either end, anchoring the house while allowing the central portion to bridge lightly across the forest floor. This strategy not only preserves the site's ecology but also eliminates the need for disruptive and costly blasting.
The dwelling hovers among the trees, oriented to capture the warmth of the western sun. Expansive glazing blurs the line between interior and exterior, offering immersive views and a strong sense of place. Skylights are carefully positioned to frame the forest canopy and allow natural light to animate the interior throughout the day.
Material selection is deeply rooted in the context: locally relevant species such as Douglas Fir plywood and Western Red Cedar create a warm, tactile interior that echoes the surrounding forest. A restrained, minimalist palette supports a quiet, contemplative atmosphere — a refuge for the family and a space to connect with the natural world in all seasons.
