Forest Archetype
Forest Archetype is a residential project located on a mountain foothill in the suburban area of Sapporo. The site enjoys an exceptional landscape: distant mountain ranges stretching from Mt. Pinneshiri to Mt. Shokanbetsu, and a nearby forest that reveals distinct expressions through the changing seasons. After passing a long approach paved with weathered steel plates, the house appears on the edge of a cliff. Its grey-toned exterior presents a restrained and resilient presence, as if enduring the harsh winter winds and snow together with the surrounding thicket.
Through repeated walks in the forest, the project gradually took shape as an attempt not merely to coexist with nature, but to create an architectural extension of the forest itself. Rather than imitating trees directly, the design abstracts the verticality, density, layering, and latent order of the forest into a geometric composition. This state was identified as the “archetype of the forest.” Large trunk-like structural elements are arranged in four parallel layers, resonating with the trees standing along the cliff and giving the building an autonomous yet landscape-responsive outline.
Inside, the architecture unfolds as a continuous spatial experience. The entrance, guided by rough concrete walls, is deliberately compressed, while beyond a copper-clad door the space opens dramatically. A large opening naturally draws the gaze toward the forest, and a folded steel spiral stair guides both body and sight upward. At the core of the house, tall furniture elements rise like trees, forming a “furniture forest” through which the family moves and lives.
The interior is organized by four layered spatial strata composed of walls aligned with the forest and furniture conceived as architectural elements. These furnishings are not treated as objects, but as spatial devices that structure the interior together with floors, walls, and ceilings. Conventional room divisions are avoided, allowing visual axes and circulation to intersect fluidly. As a result, places are not fixed but emerge through daily activities and the accumulation of time. Changes in ceiling height, depth, and openness evoke the spatial layers and atmosphere of the forest, gradually blurring the boundary between inside and outside.
Following the furniture forest from the entrance, the living room appears slightly lowered, with its floor set nearly level with the exterior ground, allowing close contact with garden plants. Diagonally across, the dining kitchen features a large blackened steel table, illuminated by soft daylight filtering down from the “outer room” above. On the second floor, a corridor suspended among the furniture trees offers the sensation of walking through the forest canopy, while four voids of varying scale gently connect family members across levels.
The ceilings above these voids are given a muted reflective quality, creating depth and a sense of proximity to the sky. This “silver plane” reflects seasonal colors—lush green in summer, autumn foliage, and winter snow—subtly infusing the interior with the changing landscape. Within each “room,” abstracted panels derived from forest branches float beneath the ceiling, forming shaded places where occupants can quietly perceive the beauty of nature.
Structurally, the house is based on a conventional wooden post-and-beam system, reinforced by the J-Seismic Opening Frame developed by J-Kenchiku System. This system provides seismic performance equivalent to shear walls while maintaining large openings, achieving both spatial openness and structural safety. Designed for the severe climate of Hokkaido, including heavy snow loads, the building satisfies Japanese Seismic Grade 2, ensuring durability and resilience.
Environmental performance is addressed through a high-airtight, high-insulation envelope suited to cold climates. A high-efficiency energy-saving boiler stabilizes indoor comfort while reducing energy consumption. Local production is emphasized in material selection: Donan cedar is used for the exterior, and Hokkaido larch for the interior, supporting regional forestry and sustainable material cycles. Composed entirely of natural materials, the house is intended to age gracefully, deepening its character over time.
Finishes are designed to be easily renewed, while the structural frame remains protected and long-lasting. Rejecting short-term consumption, the house seeks to accumulate memories and landscapes over time. Forest Archetype is not an object placed in nature, but an architectural translation of nature’s structure itself—a quiet inquiry into how architecture can engage with landscape, culture, and time.
