Echo of Song

by Yizhuo Ding

Project Description

The Song Dynasty represents a high point in Chinese aesthetic culture. During this era, literati and scholars pursued the "Four Arts of Leisure"—incense burning, tea whisking, painting appreciation, and flower arrangement—building their spiritual sanctuary amidst simplicity and elegance. Music was the very soul that ran through it all. We hoped to transform this thousand-year-old atmosphere of grace into a tangible, audible, and sensory entity in contemporary life. The Echo of Song was born from this vision. It is not merely a speaker, but a profound dialogue between time, aesthetics, and sound. Our design inspiration comes from a real and tranquil moment in history—a musician figurine unearthed from a Song Dynasty tomb in Tieguai, Nanling County. Her serene and focused expression freezes a moment from a thousand years ago, capturing the devotion and elegance of a woman playing the "bì lì." As a widely popular instrument during the Song and Yuan dynasties, the "bì lì" is a unique musical symbol of that era. We were deeply moved by this artistic power, which remains vivid even across the dust of centuries, and decided it should not be confined to a museum display case. We yearned to invite this musician from the depths of history, allowing the refined elegance of the Song people's "leisurely listening to a tune" to return to the desks and coffee tables of today. To recreate this imagery, we placed a meticulously recreated figurine of the musician at the center of a stage powered by modern acoustic technology. She stands quietly upon a base that simulates the ripples of sound waves. Bathed in the glow of a warm ambient light, the interplay of light and shadow makes it seem as if the music is transforming into visible waves, gently spreading outward. We encased this entire scene beneath Harman/Kardon's iconic transparent dome. This transparent "temporal sanctuary" not only ensures an exceptional 360-degree surround sound experience but also perfectly integrates the classical figurine with modern technology, creating a visual tension that is both retro and futuristic.
