Contemplating the Deep · A Quiet Sequence OFFICE SPACE

by WuJianPeng

Project Description

Located in a coastal city in eastern Guangdong, China, this architectural design studio integrates workspaces, reception, material display, leisure and artistic exchange. Under the theme “ORIENTAL OLD MONEY,” natural marble, solid-wood cabinetry, mirrored metal and an original art installation form a coherent spatial composition. Geometry reinterprets Chinese caisson ceilings and red brick, while the interplay of solid and void in traditional paper-cutting takes the form of a stainless-steel dancer. Contemporary craftsmanship sustains Eastern aesthetics, making the studio a work of design to be used, observed and experienced.
Stone holds landscapes; wood records time. Marble veining preserves the earth’s deep time, while wood carries the warmth of growth. Metal captures daylight and human movement. Nature’s gifts meet human creativity, renewing the ingenuity of intangible cultural heritage through contemporary materials and techniques. Cultural memory enters everyday life, as quiet materials, measured proportions and meticulous workmanship cultivate an enduring Eastern sensibility.
Light allows this atmosphere to breathe. Sunlight passes through the dancer’s cutouts onto the green marble floor, shifting with time and animating the room. At night, intelligent lighting continues the dialogue, with translucent stone and mirrored metal echoing one another. Landscape imagery and the rhythm of day and night become tangible experiences. Harmony between humanity and nature, and the shared flourishing of all things, find expression in daily life: here, landscapes are revealed and time becomes perceptible.
Metal etching, stone backlighting and fine joinery translate the team’s ideas into tangible details, giving physical form to the brand’s values. Materials are both exhibits and everyday elements; craftsmanship can be observed and tested through use. Respect for nature, cultural continuity and care for detail emerge as visible order and tactile quality. The character of ORIENTAL OLD MONEY resides in restraint and composure, sustained through every moment of work, gathering and repose.

Coming from a non-traditional background, I approach spatial design by following my innate sense of life and beauty. I draw inspiration from traditional culture and the humanities, using materials, light and shadow, and negative space to cultivate the atmosphere of an environment. I believe that human movement, emotion, and memory are integral components of a space, allowing it to become truly complete through the lived experience. Winner of the 2023 MUSE Design Award (Gold) and the 2023 TITAN Property Award (Gold) in the Office Space category.
