Project Description
This project interprets everyday dwelling through a poetic lens, rooting the design in subtle perceptions and the rhythms of emotion. At its core, it explores how delicate spatial elements—the shifts of light, the tactility of materials, the calibration of proportions—can elevate daily experience into an immersive and meaningful living scenario.
The design regards the body as both a vessel of perception and a medium of expression. Spatial transitions are treated as emotional thresholds: from the entrance “grey space” conceived as a private courtyard for a one-unit-per-floor residence, to the gradually unfolding, wood-clad interior that evokes a softly embraced sense of homecoming. Recessed forms, material shifts, and sequences of light interweave to construct intimacy, rhythm, and emotional resonance within the space.
The central concept of the project is “proportion.” Proportion exists not only within a single object but also in the balanced relationships between objects. The nested composition of the living room embodies this idea: layered cabinetry and concealed storage extend across structural elements, seamlessly connecting the kitchen with the communal area. Exquisite craftsmanship emerges through precise detailing, integrated lighting, and interactive elevations such as retractable honeycomb blinds and invisible display systems—merging functionality with visual delight.
Spatial reorganization further enhances the quality of living. The original balcony is incorporated into the interior, becoming a more generous dining and social hub; a compact workstation embedded in the recess of the shear wall demonstrates thoughtful optimization. The window-side study defines its ambience through sliding partitions and gradated floor tones while maintaining visual continuity.
Circulation is ritualized. The transitional zone between public and private areas is activated through vertical light slits and layered surfaces, metaphorically referencing the “minute glimmers of daily life”—those fleeting yet profound moments. The private quarters extend this restrained, delicate expression: the tatami guest room presents continuity of materials, while the master bedroom gains a walk-in closet by integrating the former study, elevating overall living comfort.
Inspired by philosopher Kiyokazu Washida’s notion of “pale scenery,” the project reveals how subtle, often overlooked fragments of everyday life can be perceived, acknowledged, and transformed into enduring emotional depth through intentional design. In this way, the space becomes not merely a residence, but a contemplative vessel for sensing the profound within the ordinary.
