Anantara koh yao yai resort & villas
Project Description
Completed in 2025, this project transforms a former coconut, oil palm, and rubber plantation into a refined tropical retreat where landscape, architecture, and nature exist in quiet balance. Rooted in the memory of the site as a productive landscape, the design preserves the character of the island while reinterpreting it through a contemporary hospitality experience centered on serenity, sustainability, and eco-conscious living.
The project’s landscape master planning was led by Proud Design Studio, who also participated in the design development of the beachfront villas to ensure a seamless relationship between architecture, landscape, and the surrounding tropical environment. Inspired by the movement of waves, the ocean, and the organic contours of the land, the masterplan follows a fluid and natural rhythm. Curved pathways, soft landscape forms, and sloping roof gardens respond to the terrain, creating a harmonious dialogue between built spaces and nature.
The project embraces eco-design principles through passive environmental strategies and integrated landscape infrastructure. At the beachfront villas, planted roof systems with natural grass filtration are designed to support water reuse within the landscape. Filtered greywater is collected and reused for landscape irrigation, reducing freshwater consumption for planting maintenance while reinforcing the resort’s self-sustaining ecological approach. This system allows the architecture and landscape to function together as part of a larger environmental cycle, enhancing long-term sustainability within the tropical setting.
The landscape design reflects the fluidity of water, coastlines, and marine forms. Gardens and circulation spaces unfold in gentle, wave-like patterns, encouraging guests to move through the site in a calm and intuitive way. Existing tropical vegetation is carefully integrated into the overall composition, strengthening the connection between the resort and its ecological context. Architecture remains intentionally understated, allowing nature to remain the defining experience of the resort.
The result is a tranquil destination where landscape, architecture, and ecology are carefully woven together, offering guests a sense of retreat, restoration, and connection to the island environment.
