AEON Station18

by DMZ International Design Group

Project Description

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT EXPLANATION - AEON Station 18 introduces a narrative driven retail model where the supermarket is restructured as a sequence of spatial destinations inspired by the logic of a railway station. Rather than functioning as a conventional grid based retail layout, the project organises circulation as a continuous journey, guiding users through distinct zones conceptualised as platforms.
The integration of supermarket, food hall, and wine and liquor retail within a single cohesive framework transforms the space into a hybrid commercial environment. Each component maintains its own identity while contributing to a unified spatial storyline, allowing operational efficiency and experiential engagement to coexist.
This approach repositions the supermarket as an active environment shaped by movement, anticipation, and interaction, rather than a static space defined purely by product display.
INSPIRATION - The design draws inspiration from the spatial and cultural significance of railway stations as transitional environments where movement, orientation, and human interaction intersect. In the context of Ipoh, a city historically shaped by railway connectivity and trade, this typology carries strong local resonance.
Rather than replicating literal elements, the project abstracts the essence of railway environments into spatial strategies. Curved circulation paths reflect the geometry of tracks, while platform based zoning and suspended signage reinterpret familiar transit cues.
The concept bridges memory and modernity, translating a historically rooted infrastructure into a contemporary retail experience with broader global relevance.
PRODUCTION OR REALISATION TECHNOLOGY (AND MATERIALS) - The project employs robust and durable materials suited for high traffic retail environments while maintaining a refined spatial identity. Terrazzo inspired flooring provides both visual continuity and long term performance, while metal and powder coated elements are used for custom signage and structural detailing.
Lighting design is integrated as part of the architectural language, with track systems and linear fixtures reinforcing directional flow and spatial hierarchy. Curved ceiling elements are precisely coordinated with mechanical and electrical services to maintain visual clarity across large open spans.
Custom designed fixtures, signage systems, and display elements are developed as integral components, ensuring consistency between concept, construction, and operational requirements.
